To support efficient data exploration, the NND website offers a range of interactive tools, including advanced filtering, customizable queries, and integrated data visualizations. In addition, the platform incorporates supporting ontologies that standardize clinical and neuropathological terminology, enabling systematic cross-disorder analyses and improving interoperability between datasets.
NND Publications
The NND analytical approaches build on methods developed in recent studies, including published work:
- Identification of clinical disease trajectories in neurodegenerative disorders with natural language processing. Nature Medicine (Mekkes et al., 2024)
- Disentangling the heterogeneity of multiple sclerosis through identification of independent neuropathological dimensions. Acta Neuropathologica (De Boer et al., 2024)
By making these curated datasets accessible through an intuitive interface, the NND aims to accelerate collaborative research and advance our understanding of brain disorders.
Our ambition – transition into a rich data resource
Supported by the ZonMw Hoofdzaken program, the NBB is developing a new cloud infrastructure to provide external researchers access to extensive datasets.
Rich, standardized clinical and neuropathological datasets have been extracted from donor files using large language models. The infrastructure will provide access to these data via three major interfaces: clinical data, neuropathological traits and images, and genetic data. The infrastructure will support data driven research approaches and enable improved selection of donors and samples for tissue research.
The NND team is also exploring artificial intelligence tools to support neuropathological assessment in collaboration with the Amsterdam UMC pathology department. These include models for automated segmentation of histological images, as well as predictive models integrating spatial transcriptomics.
