Foamy microglia link oxylipins to disease progression in multiple sclerosis

The authors found that in certain MS lesions, microglia can become “foamy”: filled with lipid-rich material after taking up damaged myelin. These foamy microglia were linked to molecular signals associated with inflammation, iron accumulation and lesion expansion.
By better understanding why some lesions resolve while others keep progressing, we can get one step closer to identifying new markers and potential therapeutic targets for progressive MS.
